WHAT it is:
Body Composition Analysis evaluates a person’s weight by breaking it down into it’s core components of fat, protein, minerals, and body water.
The InBody 570 is a fast, accurate, non-invasive, cost-effective tool that helps us go deeper than the dreaded bathroom scale. Like a lot of other machines, it does not use empirical estimations based on age, sex, ethnicity, or body type. Instead, Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioimpedance Analysis (can you say that 5 times fast??) technology measures body segments separately for an accurate analysis based on your unique body.
In short, it uses fancy electrical signals to precisely measure your body’s makeup of body fat, muscle mass, total body water, and more.
WHY it’s helpful:
Using weight alone or the body mass index (BMI) are seriously limited data points when it comes to setting and achieving your health and wellness goals. Weight alone just shows your body vs. gravity, and it’s typical for your weight to fluctuate from 2-6 pounds day-to-day!
For someone focused on weight alone, it might be common to lose 10 pounds while white-knuckling their way through a miserable calorie-restricted diet. They may celebrate the loss on the scale while not realizing that they inadvertently lost much-needed muscle instead of body fat <EEK!>. (Which is also a big reason why those quick-fix miserable diets don’t stick!).
BMI is an over-generalized “estimate” of your amount of body fat based on your height and weight. BMI does NOT distinguish between fat, muscle, or bone mass, which is a huge problem when it comes to getting a good look at your true health status. Think about it this way: You put in the hard work to lose 10 pounds of fat and gain 10 pounds of muscle, and while your body would look drastically different and be healthier, your BMI wouldn’t budge!
The InBody Scan shows a much more detailed view of what you’re made of. In just 45 seconds, you’ll get a printout with critical data points including:
- Percent body fat (WAY more useful than BMI)
- Skeletal muscle mass (what we help you build in FIT and LIFT!)
- Visceral fat mass (the not-good fat that accumulates around your organs/belly)
- Basal Metabolic Rate (the minimum calories you need to be alive)
- Body water balance (which can indicate inflammation or injury)
- And more!
The benefit of this data is it can help us really hone your fitness and health goals and help you track your progress over time.
